How to Actually USE Your Coupons At the Store

We've all done it, spent countless time matching our coupons to the deals, sorting them out, making them ready for our shopping trip. Then we somehow manage to either leave them at home or in the car or if we do bring them in, we forget to give the cashier half of them at the register. FRUSTRATING!!

For quite some time I've been using a really simple system that has been helping me combat this issue of forgetfulness combined with pressure at the register. It is a very easy plan that anyone can implement immediately.

  • I make my shopping list and match up all the corresponding coupons for my items.

  • I have 2 regular envelopes for each store I shop. One envelope is labeled with the store name "CVS or Walgreens, etc" and the other is labeled "Register".

  • I start out by having all of the coupons that I will be using for that particular trip in the store envelope.

  • As I make my progress around the store, I move the coupons for the products I've added to my cart into the "Register" envelope.

  • Once I get to the register, only the coupons in that "Register" envelope are handed to the cashier. No fumbling, no forgetting, no problem!

****Another little tool I've been using is a couple of clothespins. Many times I want to do multiple transactions in order to roll my Register Rewards or ECBs. Instead of having to dig around in the envelope or carrying even more envelopes, I just clip the coupons for the other transaction(s) into a handy dandy clothespin. Easy peasy.

Show Me the Savings! How to Save With Little to No Effort

Today we'll talk a little bit about some super easy ways to either put money back into your pocket or have it never leave there to begin with.

Each of these items are something we do in our household now or have in the past. None of them are very painful and some you won't even notice you're doing...

  • Use Coupons - yes a topic near & dear to my heart. Even if you just use a 2 for 1 coupon at the dry cleaners one time, you'll have that extra $2.50 or so still in your pocket..
  • Eat at Home. I know, who wants to cook. BUT, if you add up how much it costs to "just grab a burger" or "pick up that pizza", you'll be shocked. Save the dining out for a single night a week or special occasions. It'll be worth it healthwise & pocketwise.
  • When you do dine out, skip the drinks. Water is FREE at restaurants & healthy...
  • Do away with the soda habits. I know I'm banging on that "HEALTHY" drum again, but good old H20 is a much, much better choice in all ways.
  • Keep the Change! This is one we've done for years. We're saving up to go to Scotland for a special wedding anniversary. We've been putting our pennies, nickels and dimes in a 5 gallon water jug. It's so heavy right now I can't move it! Every time it gets full-ish, we cash it in and put that money into a special savings account. By the time that anniversary rolls around, it'll be completely paid for - in change!
  • Open an online savings account - stick just $20 in it every week and you'll have $1040 (+INTEREST) in it at the end of just one year. That's a thousand bucks that you won't know you're saving. If you have it done as an automatic deposit, you'll never miss that twenty dollar bill you don't see.
  • Get rid of the cable bill. We get over 25 channels on FREE broadcast TV and subscribe to Netflix over the internet (using our Xbox as a receiver). Our total cost? $9.99 per month. We never run out of things to watch.
  • Negotiate for a better price with your phone carrier. I call mine regularly to see what kinds of specials they have and ask them to lower my bill. I've been a customer for decades and I remind them of that when I call. They can usually find something to help save me some money.
  • Watch for Free Admission days to parks, museums and many other attractions. Especially as it gets near their busy seasons, they will have special days.

What can you think of to add to this list? I'd love to hear from you.

Store Loyalty Card Programs Are Your Friend and Partner in Crime

My store loyalty or store rewards cards are something I never shop without. The savings and extra perks that come with them can be extraordinary.

I always encourage my friends, my students and just about anyone I meet to sign up for programs at any of the places they shop at, eat out at or even go to watch movies! It is amazing how much a person can be missing out on by not "belonging" to these clubs.

It seems that just about every place you can spend money on has some type of reward program in place. Many of them will even reward you to spread the word and share the joy with others (this would be the affiliate programs that you'll hear me speak of regularly).

The photo up above shows the drug store cards I have on my key ring. You really don't even need to carry the cards any more as each of these stores will take your phone number instead.

The photo below shows just a small sampling of some other rewards programs - these three cards just happened to be within my reach when I started on this post. I belong to a ton of different programs, both online and for physical stores.

The first is the new Plenti card. I'm still learning the ins & outs of it, but so far I'm pretty impressed with the system - especially since it is tied into Rite-Aid along with many other stores I shop at.

The second card is the Shell Fuel Rewards card. A while back I wrote about this card in THIS POST. I'm so totally loving this program. Since I posted about my find, I've saved .05, .25, .30 and .45 off per gallon - 20 gallons at a time. Major, major savings on my fuel bill.

The final one is a local livestock feed store that I frequently shop at - I earn 2% cash back on everything I buy in there. Let me tell you, it really adds up when you're buying $500 loads of chicken feed at a time!

You can find these programs just about everywhere. Take *advantage of them, that's what they are there for.

*That taking advantage of the savings is why I consider these cards my partners in crime. I feel like I'm stealing when I work some of the sale/coupon/rewards deals and get free items. But it's all good and it's all legal!

Happy Shopping and tell me about some of your favorite loyalty programs.

FREE Shell Fuel Rewards Program - Extreme Gas or Diesel Savings

NEVER Pay Full Price for Fuel Again!

I hate to admit it, but on occasion, I have been lazy about using my rewards and savings cards. After today, that won't be happening again. I'm excited!

I signed up for the Shell Fuel Rewards program a month or so ago. BUT, I didn't remember to use it at the station until today - what a dummy I've been. I've been missing out on $$$$$!

Anyway, I told the Shell station cashier I wanted $60 on pump #10. She reminded me to swipe my Fuels Rewards card or use my member #. I swiped the card and then she exclaimed "Wow, you really saved a lot today!" I was expecting the guaranteed savings of at least .03/gallon for program members. She then proceeded to tell me I'd saved $11.02 on my fuel.

Whoo hoooo! Instead of paying the displayed $2.69/gallon, I ended up saving .25/gallon and only paying $2.44/gallon. Score! The cashier told me that she's had some people get their entire fill-up for free due to their rewards card savings. I wasn't even aware of the various ways that you can build your discount to lower your cost per gallon, so I came home and jumped online to find out.

What I discovered is that I had received a .25/gallon reward to my account when I linked my Mastercard upon signing up. That was all there was to it & I didn't even know I'd done it!

It is extremely easy to join this program, just sign up HERE and they will mail you your card and member info. Along with the Mastercard bonus I received, linking up other specified cards will also earn you more discounts. This allows you to rack up even more savings at the pump just from eating out, traveling and SHOPPING.. You are also rewarded just by paying for your fuel using one of your linked cards along with your Fuel Rewards card. Double bonus!

If you're like me and always looking for more ways to save, this one is a keeper and well worth the few minutes it takes to sign up. They've also developed a free killer app for our smartphones. Don't be a dummy like me and wait any longer.
